How it works
Total growth is ((End − Start) ÷ Start) × 100. CAGR (compound annual growth rate) is ((End ÷ Start)^(1 ÷ Periods) − 1) × 100, which spreads the growth evenly across each period.
Example
Growing from 100,000 to 161,051 over 5 periods gives total growth of 61.05% and a CAGR of 10% per period.
Assumptions & limitations
CAGR assumes smooth, steady growth each period — actual growth may have been uneven even if the CAGR is accurate for the total.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between total growth and CAGR?
Total growth is the overall % change. CAGR expresses that same change as a constant annual rate, useful for comparing across different time spans.
