How this is calculated

New Zealand has no tax-free personal allowance — tax applies from the first dollar, progressively across five bands: 10.5% up to $15,600, 17.5% up to $53,500, 30% up to $78,100, 33% up to $180,000, and 39% above that. The ACC Earner's Levy is 1.75% of liable earnings for 2026-27, capped at $156,641 (a maximum levy of $2,741.22).

Worked example

On a $70,000 salary: tax is $13,220.50 (10.5% on the first $15,600, 17.5% on the next $37,900, and 30% on the remaining $16,500). The ACC levy is $1,225 (1.75% of $70,000). Estimated take-home: $55,554.50.

Assumptions & limitations

  • Does not include KiwiSaver contributions (default rate 3.5% from 1 April 2026 for employees who haven't opted for a different rate).
  • Does not include student loan repayments (12% above the $24,128 threshold, unchanged for 2026-27).
  • Does not include the Independent Earner Tax Credit (IETC) — up to $520/year for earners between $24,000–$70,000 not receiving certain benefits — which would increase actual take-home pay for eligible earners.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a tax-free threshold in New Zealand?

No. Unlike many countries, New Zealand taxes income from the first dollar earned — there's no personal allowance.

What is the ACC Earner's Levy?

A levy that funds New Zealand's accident compensation scheme, deducted from salary and wages alongside income tax, currently 1.75% of earnings up to an annual cap.

Could my actual take-home pay be higher than this estimate?

Yes, if you're eligible for the Independent Earner Tax Credit (IETC), which isn't modeled here and could add up to $520/year back to your pay.
